OnePlus Nord 2 comes in a stylish black cardboard box. The name of the line is written in large letters on the front. If you remove the top of the package, you will see a blue cardboard insert. This dilutes the strict style a little and adds color.
Inside, we are greeted by the smartphone itself, wrapped in a protective film. And, of course, nice additions, such as a transparent silicone case, a 65-watt power supply, and a red USB cable. Agree that red wires are quite rare in smartphones, so this is a small distinguishing feature of OnePlus. All the necessary documentation is also present, but we will not dwell on it and immediately move on to the design of the phone.
The design of the phone is extremely minimalistic and sophisticated. Here you will not find huge logos that Poco smartphones often sin with. In the middle of the body of the Nord 2 is a small and almost invisible OnePlus logo. In the upper left corner of the screen is a tiny hole for the front camera. It is not as conspicuous as if it were in the center of the display. The frames are thin, because the active area is 85.8%. The block with the main camera is also made very neatly. In short, aesthetes and perfectionists will definitely like the look of the novelty.
And what about dimensions? The phone measures 158.9 x 73.2 x 8.3 mm and weighs 189 grams. Quite normal and not cumbersome by today's standards.
The back is made of tempered glass Corning Gorilla Glass 5, and this is indescribably pleasing. The glass case feels good in the hands and does not collect fingerprints, as glossy plastic does. But the side faces are already plastic, which gives the average price category of the device. There are three colors to choose from: Gray Sierra (gray), Blue Haze (light blue) and Green Wood (khaki).
The smartphone is perfectly assembled: no squeaks or noticeable backlashes. On the right side there is a power button and a mode switch - standard, vibration and silent. This is convenient, but most users will still out of habit turn on the desired mode in the phone itself. The left side is reserved for the volume rocker. The bottom end is occupied by a Type-C connector, a slot for two SIM cards, a speaker and a microphone hole.
As you may have guessed, there is no headphone port, as well as space for an SD card. This is sad, because using wired headphones and expanding the memory will not work. You will have to be content with a wireless headset and a 256 GB modification.
There are no complaints about the screen. The Nord 2 has an AMOLED matrix with the Fluid prefix. These are unique matrices produced by OnePlus, but in reality they are no different from regular or super amole ones. The maximum screen refresh rate is 90Hz. In the settings, you can select 60 Hz if you want to increase battery life. The display size is 6.43 inches. Of course, OnePlus Nord 2 does not claim to be a compact phone, but now manufacturers are releasing devices with an even larger diagonal.
The screen resolution is 2400 by 1080 pixels, that is, Full HD+. The aspect ratio is 20:9, the pixel density is 409 PPI, the maximum brightness is 700 lux. Let's just say that the display is very colorful and bright. There will be no problems even when used in sunny weather. All colors are transmitted as accurately and deeply as possible - thanks to the AMOLED screen. The sensor is responsive and works at lightning speed, especially noticeable at a frequency of 90 Hz.
The fingerprint scanner is hidden under the screen. Just put your finger on the bottom of the display and the phone will be unlocked. The scanner works at lightning speed, but your hands must be clean and dry. Someone likes the sensor built into the power button more, but this option is usually implemented in mid-range devices, and here we have a junior flagship. Agree that the under-screen scanner looks more top-end and cool.
But what about PWM protection, you ask? There is no definitive answer, since the company has not said anything about the DC Dimming feature. We dare to assume that it is not. This is very sad. People with sensitive eyes should not use the phone at low brightness. If you want to learn more about PWM, welcome to a separate article .
We proceed to the "stuffing" of the phone. Nord 2 has a powerful 6nm MediaTek Dimensity 1200 5G processor with 8 cores: one of the most productive Cortex-A78 (3.0 GHz), three medium Cortex-A78 (2.8 GHz) and four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 (2.0 GHz). This is the flagship solution from MediaTek, so there are no questions about performance. The graphics accelerator also deserves respect - this is the Mali-G77 MC9, which copes with all demanding toys at high and ultra settings.
In AnTuTu, the phone scores approximately 625 thousand points, in GeekBench - 3197 points. Of course, these are worthy indicators, but in numbers the phone loses to Realme GT Neo, which runs on the same processor, but in AnTuTu it gains as much as 700 thousand points.
There are speculations that OnePlus is underperforming in synthetic tests due to heat optimization. In reality, you won't notice much difference: Nord 2 runs PUBG MOBILE, Call of Duty, Shadowgun Legends and other powerful games at maximum settings without any problems. Throttling is, but within reason. Of course, during long games, the smartphone heats up, but during everyday use, the back cover remains cool.
Buyers are offered two versions: 8/128 GB and 12/256 GB. These are top modifications: 12 gigabytes of RAM will be enough, 8 GB will also be enough, even if you are an avid user. With permanent storage, everything is not so simple, because a memory card is not provided, and it is impossible to expand the built-in storage. In this case, I would like to see a 512 GB version, but the manufacturer did not implement this option. So if you often take pictures, shoot videos, download a lot of applications and resource games, don't even consider 128 gigabytes - immediately take 256 GB and be happy.
You can’t find fault with the type of drive, since the top standard is UFS 3.1. The memory is very fast, so we guarantee no problems with the speed of reading and writing data. The RAM standard is called LPDDR4X. This is also a high-speed option, but it loses to the flagship LPDDR5 type.
The Nord 2 has fresh Android 11 running OxygenOS 11.3 proprietary firmware with the prospect of further updates. This shell is stable, so you will not notice any problems with the functioning. All options work very smoothly, nothing slows down, does not lag or crash. I would like it in MIUI , right?
We are moving towards the main and front cameras. The main camera of the Nord 2 is equipped with three modules: the main 50-megapixel Sony IMX 776 sensor with f / 1.9 aperture, 8 MP wide (f / 2.3 aperture, 119˚ viewing angle) and 2 MP sensor with f / 2.4 aperture (monochrome) . The photos are of very good quality, the colors are transmitted naturally, the detail is excellent. Even when shooting at night, you can note accurate color reproduction and a minimum amount of noise. In terms of photo quality , OnePlus Nord 2 is not inferior to competitors such as Poco F 3 and Oppo Find X 3 Pro . Unfortunately Nord 2 loses to Realme GT Neo .
Shooting video on OnePlus is very convenient due to optical stabilization. The maximum video quality is 4K@30fps. It's frustrating that there is no 8K or 4K@60fps. The front camera was a pleasant surprise: instead of the usual 16-20 megapixels, we are met by 32 megapixels. Selfies come out clear and colorful even in low light.
Now let's consider all those small communications that did not find a place in other points. First of all, the NFC module - and, of course, it is here, but how else for a pre-flagship device. It works properly in any European country, you just need to add cards to Google Pay. Next comes dual-band Wi-Fi 6, the brand new Bluetooth 5.2 and a full suite of navigation services (GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO). As you already know, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack. The radio was also not added. In short, everything is very poor in terms of ports: there is only USB Type-C 2.0. There are no complaints about the sound: it is loud and clear, because there are stereo speakers.
Everything is fine with mobile communication at Oneplace Nord 2. It supports not only 4G with all the necessary European bands, but also 5G. There is no sense in the fifth generation network now, but this is a feature for the future.
The battery capacity of Nord 2 is 4500 mAh. Normal, but I would like at least 5000 mAh, especially considering that the 90 Hz refresh rate actively absorbs the charge. Therefore, the phone can be actively used all day, and then sent for recharge. For two days of battery life, you will have to set 60 Hz and reduce resource-intensive activities (games, watching videos, video calling) in time.
Pleasant moment: OnePlus Nord 2 supports 65-watt fast charging, which will feed the battery up to 100% in just half an hour. There is no wireless charging, because we have a younger one, and not a full-fledged flagship.
OnePlus Nord 2 5G costs around $400-$500. On AliExpress, the global 8/128 GB version can be purchased for about $425. For the top modification (12 + 256 GB) you will have to pay $520 already. Of course, this is not a budget smartphone, but it more than justifies its price.
Should I buy OnePlus Nord 2 5G - definitely yes. This is a cool device, the hardware of which will remain relevant and powerful for at least another 4 years. The cameras take great pictures, the screen is of high quality, the firmware is optimized. For most users, the capabilities of OnePlasa Nord 2 are enough. If you do not want to overpay for an expensive flagship, take a closer look at the new product under review.
