Well, friends, we burst into you with a very non-standard review. In the sense that today's guest will not be a smartphone, but a brand new tablet released by Xiaomi - Pad 5. The declared technical characteristics of Xiaomi Pad 5 look royal. The 120Hz display refresh, 2.5K resolution, and the cool Snapdragon 860 processor are especially noteworthy. The battery capacity is also worthy of respect, and we put a big plus for fast 33-watt charging. We drove to figure out how the tablet behaves in life.
The basic equipment of Xiaomi Pad 5 is very poor. You only get the tablet itself and a 22.5W power supply. More powerful charging will have to be purchased separately, as well as additional accessories. The company has released a branded stylus with an official cost of 99 euros and a keyboard case, for which you need to pay 55 euros. I am glad that these gadgets are generally provided, and you don’t have to purchase third-party low-quality accessories from left-handed manufacturers.
To some extent, it's even better that the stylus and keyboard are not included, since they would significantly increase the cost of the device. But not all users need such accessories, so why would they overpay? Since the tablet package is minimal, you yourself have to decide whether you need a stylus and a keyboard, and whether you are ready to pay a rather big amount for them (although compared to Apple accessories, the cost of Xiaomi gadgets will seem even low).
Look, the stylus is useful for drawing and handwriting. That is, it will be useful to schoolchildren and students who want to replace ordinary notebooks with a tablet. A keyboard case will be needed for comfortable typing, which will be relevant for copywriters and other people whose work is related to typing.
Xiaomi Pad 5 looks premium and stylish. The dimensions of the tablet are 254.7x166.3x6.9 mm with a weight of 511 grams. The device is thin and light, despite its impressive size. The thickness of the frames is minimal by modern standards. In general, the design of the novelty is cool and no worse than that of tablets with a higher price tag.
The case is made of plastic with a matte coating, but the side edges are aluminum. The back cover is pleasant to the touch, but collects fingerprints. The novelty can be purchased in three calm and unobtrusive colors: dark gray, white and green.
Unfortunately, there is no fingerprint scanner, and this is a big disappointment. Indeed, before the presentation, all insiders and the media stubbornly talked about the presence of a fingerprint sensor. Therefore, the only security options are to use a regular alphanumeric password or turn on Face ID.
There is no slot for a memory card, as well as an audio jack. In almost all new smartphones, these elements are also missing, so you have to put up with this reality. Let's say a few more words about additional gadgets: the stylus is mounted on a magnet to the side of the tablet, and the keyboard is connected using a special connector on the left side.
The screen on the Pad 5 is just great. Yes, some may be confused by the IPS matrix instead of AMOLED, but we will also find a positive side here - there will be no heavy load on the eyes and, accordingly, discomfort. The display diagonal is 11 inches, which is the best option. 2.5K resolution, True Tone technology is supported, which works quite well.
Peak brightness reaches 500 nits. This may not seem enough: I would like 800 nits or at least 600. But in reality, there are no problems with brightness. Even in direct sunlight, you can easily make out the information displayed on the display. The frequency of 120 Hz fully justifies itself: everything works very quickly, smoothly and beautifully.
The Xiaomi Pad 5 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 860 processor on board. This is a flagship-level chip that should be able to handle all powerful games and resource-intensive applications. In fact, it is: the tablet has been tested in the games Shadowgun Legends and Genshin Impact. The result pleasantly surprised us. In Shadowgun we get a stable 60 FPS, in Genshin - 48 FPS. These are really great numbers. The absence of crazy heating is also pleasing, since the back cover remains just warm throughout the game. Let's remember what kind of horror is happening with heating in the Snapdragon 888 and 888 Plus.
You can also do video editing, although the conditions are far from being as comfortable as on iPads. Pad 5 stubbornly refused to edit a 4K video, but FHD pulls without problems (thanks to the processor).
You will not find fault with the work of the firmware either. Xiaomi was able to optimize its shell for tablets, so you will not encounter major glitches. Minor freezes sometimes happened, but this is not critical. In general, the novelty works as quickly as possible.
Let's talk about another important point - application adaptation. There were no miracles here. Yes, the company has worked hard on displaying programs, you can’t argue with that. But many applications are still stretched, or there is unnecessary free space on the sides. The Miyuai interface itself looks good, although some functions have been removed: there is no settings icon in the notification shade, it is problematic to customize the desktop to your liking, there is no personalized feed from Google.
Luckily, many popular apps display correctly. These include YouTube, Spotify, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok, Netflix, ibisPaint X, VLC, Photoshop Express, Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop Fix, 2GIS and most Google services. But significant jambs are observed in Glovo, AliExpress and Google Files. Perhaps other lesser known programs that we have not tested are not adapted. In principle, the situation with applications is not bad. But be prepared for the fact that some programs may look completely uncomme il faut.
In terms of communications, everything is very basic and even uninteresting. LTE support was not delivered, it is only in Xiaomi Pad 5 Pro, which will not be officially sold in Europe. Pad 5 only has Wi-Fi. This is not critical, because in the absence of Wi-Fi, you can distribute mobile Internet to your tablet from your phone. There is also Bluetooth 5.0. There is no GPS. NFS is also absent, which is quite logical (just imagine how you will pay with an 11-inch tablet in a store). Pad 5 also boasts cool sound due to four stereo speakers. It is very pleasant to play and watch movies.
The cameras on the Xiaomi Pad 5 are mediocre, which is to be expected. Agree that taking pictures on a tablet is inconvenient, and few people do it. Therefore, the average quality of the photo can be forgiven. The main camera takes good pictures in daylight. Selfies are so-so. But you can communicate via video conferencing without any problems. I would like to put a separate fat plus for an excellent microphone and speakers: you will hear the interlocutor well, just like he will hear you.
Xiaomi Pad 5 is equipped with a 8720 mAh battery. Considering the diagonal of the screen, this is the optimal capacity. With active use, the charge is enough for a day and a half. If desired, the battery life can be stretched to two full days. The tablet charges in about two hours, what is the fast charging service.
The 6/128 GB version costs 349 euros, while the 6/256 GB version costs 399 euros. On AliExpress, prices are practically the same: for a basic modification, you need to pay $ 400, for an extended one - $ 50 more. We recommend that you carefully monitor all sales on AliExpress and use coupons. After all, on September 23, the tablet could be purchased for only 300 bucks.
Xiaomi Pad 5 is a cool tablet that has no competitors in this price segment. Even models that cost several times more have more or less similar parameters. Personally, I see no reason to overpay for expensive Samsung models or buy a used iPad with an outdated design. For basic use, Xiaomi Pad 5 will be more than enough. You can play games, watch movies, surf social networks, and even work in office applications (Word and Excel work fine).
