In the footsteps of the European Union: the US wants to adopt a single port standard for charging
So far, there is only a proposal to switch to USB Type-C for all gadgets
In recent years, the release of almost every iPhone is accompanied by rumors that Apple will nevertheless switch to the bright side of goodness and abandon Lightning in favor of USB Type-C. But the company stubbornly clings to a proprietary and outdated standard. Therefore, in Europe, it was decided to “break through the knee” for her and other companies - a single connector for gadgets was approved. Starting in the summer of 2024, all smartphones, e-readers, portable consoles, headphones, tablets and other gadgets must have a USB Type-C port.
To stop tyagomotina with various connectors and hit on Apple set out to her patrimony - the United States. There were three US senators who took the initiative to introduce a unified connector and sent a proposal to the US Department of Commerce. They referred to the will of citizens who are tired of having to use various cables and chargers.
Among the benefits of such a move, senators cited reduced electronic spending, user convenience, and cost savings. They believe that the European Union did the right thing by introducing a single charging standard. European officials were able to resist pressure from the biggest tech companies that resisted the initiative. In their letter, the senators referred to a survey where about 40% of respondents said that at least once they faced the problem of being unable to charge a gadget due to the lack of a compatible connector.
It should be understood that this is only an initiative that must go through the stage of discussion and approval. Only after the requirement to establish a single standard is fixed at the legislative level, it will be possible to say that Apple will still be forced to bury Lightning. True, if rumors are to be believed, the company is already going to do it in 2023 with the release of the iPhone 15.
