Comparison of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and Meizu MX5

Many will find that comparing two phones of different price segments would be inappropriate, and one cannot but agree with this. On the other hand, there are people who thoughtfully approach the choice of a smartphone and for whom the appearance and materials of the case are not as important as the capabilities of the hardware stuffing. And in this regard, the comparison of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and Meizu MX5 smartphones will be very justified, because each of them received a powerful 8-core Helio X10 processor, but at the same time, these devices differ in cost from each other by almost 2 times.

Therefore, the purpose of this comparison is to try to find out whether it is worth paying extra for the more expensive and refined Meizu MX5, or you can completely get by with the much more affordable Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, which provides almost the same level of performance. And is the “extra” 1 GB of RAM, a metal case and a fingerprint scanner worth the difference of $ 150 compared to the price of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2.

Recall that for each of the smartphones presented in this comparison, we have already made detailed video and text reviews. Once again, you can read the review of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone at this link , and you can find the video review of the Meizu MX5 smartphone here .

It's time to start our comparison, but before we start, let's list the main technical characteristics of these devices. For a clearer picture, we have summarized the main characteristics of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and Meizu MX5 smartphones into a single table that will help you immediately get an idea of how they are similar and how they differ from each other.

As you can see, although each of these smartphones received the Helio X10 processor, they also have serious differences that are not limited only to the design and case materials. Moreover, not only the more expensive and advanced Meizu MX5 has advantages, but also Redmi Note 2, some of which may turn out to be very important for someone.

But now let's move on to a more detailed analysis and comparison of these smartphones, starting according to the established tradition with their appearance.

one.        Comparison of the appearance of smartphones, their dimensions and weight.

Even with the naked eye, it is noticeable that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone is significantly higher than its opponent. At the same time, its body is made entirely of plastic, and the side faces of its body form almost right angles with the plane of the rear panel. Of course, the corners here are not sharp and have some roundings, but they cannot be compared with the smoother transitions of the back panel of the Meizu MX5 case to its side faces. As you know, the case of the Meizu M2 Note smartphone, which is essentially a representative of the same price segment as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, is also made of plastic. But at the same time, the side edges of the case also have a smoother curve towards the rear panel, which provides better ergonomics and a more elegant appearance.

What prevented Xiaomi from following in the same footsteps and moving away from this brick-shaped smartphone design of yesteryear will remain a mystery to us. Indeed, the thickness of the case Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and Meizu M2 Note are almost identical.

But back to the participants in our comparison. Of course, more expensive materials are used in the construction of the Meizu MX5 smartphone. Its body is made from a single billet, the material of which was a durable alloy of aluminum and magnesium. Although in fairness, we note that here there is also plastic, or the so-called polymer, which fills the slots in the upper and lower parts of the rear panel. This is necessary for the normal operation of the antennas built into the device. But at the same time, the inserts practically do not differ in color from the rest of the back panel, although they are highlighted with a special silver edging for a more spectacular appearance.

Undoubtedly, the body of the Meizu MX5 smartphone looks simply gorgeous, especially against the background of its nondescript opponent from Xiaomi.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 5

The arrangement of elements on the body of each of the devices is largely similar. The power and volume buttons are located almost identically on the right side of the case, although the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2's power button is slightly further away from the volume button.

Connectors Micro-USB, 3.5 mm audio and microphones are located on the same ends of the cases of each of the smartphones. Slightly to the left or to the right in this case does not play a special role. But there are also some differences. Firstly, the slots for the external speaker on the Meizu MX5 smartphone are located on the bottom of the case, while on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, on the back of the case. And the advantages of one or another solution already depend on how you carry your smartphone - in your pocket, bag, etc. Secondly, on the upper end of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 case there is an infrared transmitter for controlling home appliances. But the most important difference is that the cover of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone is removable, which gives you 2 undeniable advantages:

one)       removing it, you get access to a removable battery that can be replaced if necessary,

2)       and you can always replace the cover itself as it wears out or just if you want to change its color.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 7

Also under the cover of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 are SIM trays and a full-fledged Micro-SD memory card slot. Whereas in the Meizu MX5 smartphone, SIM cards are loaded through the tray on the left side of the case, and there is no slot for memory cards at all.

You can also say about the differences in the LED flashes on the back of the case, since in Redmi Note 2 it is single-section and has 1 glow tone, and in the MX5 the flash has 2 glow tones, and under it there is also a laser focus sensor window. But this is not as important as the presence (or absence) of a slot for memory cards and a removable battery.

And finally, one cannot fail to mention the presence on the front panel of the M eizu MX5 of the touch-mechanical mBack button, which has a built-in fingerprint scanner. Even if we do not take into account the scanner itself, then we have already seen the advantages of this button in terms of functionality compared to the usual touch button “Home”. At the same time, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone can only respond with the presence of standard red-backlit touch buttons. And we know that there are also a large number of supporters of this decision, many of whom simply do not understand how these buttons can be replaced with just one, and also do not accept Flyme's proprietary shell from M eizu as such.

Both smartphones are quite comfortable to hold in your hand, even Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, despite its angular shape. Although the tactile sensations from the body of the MX5 are much more pleasant, and it sits better in the hand. The same goes for the build quality of both devices. It seems that both smartphones are assembled “in good faith”, but if you don’t find any squeaks or backlashes in the MX5 no matter how hard you try, then you can still find minor flaws in the assembly of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2.

Returning to the dimensions of each of the smartphones, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is taller and thicker, although the MX5 is slightly wider, although in practice this is not felt due to the thinner side edges of its body. There is also no noticeable weight difference of 9 grams in favor of the MX5.

Summing up this chapter, let's say that, as expected, in terms of design, assembly and materials, the Meizu MX5 simply smashed its opponent to smithereens, which was to be expected from a premium model. Although the functionality of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is much more preferable, because for many, the ability to replace the cover, battery, increase the amount of internal memory and even the IR transmitter will be much more important than a stylish appearance and even a fingerprint scanner.

Next, we will move on to comparing the displays of Meizu MX5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphones.

2.        Comparison of displays.

As you already understood from the table at the beginning of our comparison, both smartphones received displays with the same size and resolution, but different types of matrices. We will not go into lengthy discussions about the advantages or disadvantages of IPS and AMOLED technologies, since many treatises have already been written about this both on the pages of our portal and on other Internet resources, and each of you probably already has your own preferences in this matter. Therefore, we will compare the displays of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 and Meizu MX5 from a philistine point of view.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 12

The first thing that catches your eye is the narrower bezels around the edges of the display (left and right) of the Meizu MX5 smartphone. By eye, the difference is at least a third of the width, and from an aesthetic point of view, the advantages of the MX5 are undeniable, although this should be expected from a device of a higher class.

Further, we noticed that with the same position of the brightness slider, the display of the M eizu MX5 smartphone is much brighter. Moreover, when the viewing angle deviates from the perpendicular, this difference only becomes more noticeable. At the same time, the viewing angles of both displays are very high.

Finally, one of the most important tests of the display is the direct sunlight test. With this test, both smartphones coped without any problems. The picture on the display of each of the smartphones remains well readable even on the brightest sunny day. In this regard, I am glad that the inexpensive Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is practically not inferior to its premium opponent.

Although in fairness it should be said that due to the higher brightness, the Meizu MX5 AMOLED display behaves a little better in the sun, which is especially noticeable when viewed from sharp angles.

The display of the M eizu MX5 smartphone is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, and the manufacturer of the protective glass of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 display is not known. In the test for the number of simultaneous touches of the Multitouch Test program, the displays of both smartphones showed the number 10.

Thus, although the Meizu MX5 displays performed somewhat better in a face-to-face comparison, the display quality of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 should also be given credit, especially given the huge price difference between these two devices.

Next, we will simultaneously test the M eizu MX5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphones in the benchmarks we are used to and compare the results obtained.

3.        Comparison of the technical part of smartphones and the results shown by them in popular benchmarks.

You could already see the difference in the hardware of the compared smartphones in the table. The Meizu MX5 smartphone received a higher clocked version of the H elio X10 processor, as well as 1 GB more RAM than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 20

And before we go directly to the benchmarks, let's say that we previously tested Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 with the MIUI 6.6 operating system based on Android 5.0.2, but before this comparison, the MIUI 7 shell version became available, which we installed in our instance . The changes affected the interface of the shell, and we also noticed the appearance of slow motion video at 120 fps.

Well, now let's move on to testing by choosing a productive power mode in each of the smartphones.

In the test of the AnTuTu v.5.7.1 program, the Meizu MX5 smartphone showed 46081 points, while Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 gave the number 43551. And if earlier Meizu MX5 showed almost the same result in the review, then the operating system update for Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 definitely went benefit by adding more than 4 thousand points to the result.

As you can see from the detailed report on this test, the main advantage of the MX5 over the Redmi Note 2 was in the multitasking test, which is explained by the large amount of RAM, and in the tests related to the processor, which is also explained by the higher clock speed. Although, using the LeTV One (X600) smartphone as an example, we made sure that the difference in clock frequency does not always play in favor of a device with a higher frequency. The M eizu MX5 also performed better in the memory module performance test and slightly outperformed the opponent in the 3D graphics test, although we will check the latter in a separate benchmark.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 23

In the test of the 3D Mark program, both smartphones performed well, but as expected, Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 fell slightly behind in each of the graphics tests of this program.

Thus, the Meizu MX5 smartphone won over its opponent in the system performance test as well. Perhaps the Prime version of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone would have performed on an equal footing with it, although it also has 2 GB of RAM versus 3 GB for the M eizu MX5.

4.        Comparison of the arsenal of built-in sensors.

Next, we will compare the presence of built-in sensors in Meizu MX5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphones using the Sensor List program, and present the results in the form of a table for clarity.

Meizu MX5

Accelerometer, Magnetic Field Sensor, Gyroscope, Orientation Sensor, Gravity Sensor, Linear Acceleration Sensor, Vector Rotation Sensor, Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2

Accelerometer, Magnetic Field Sensor, Gyroscope, Orientation Sensor, Gravity Sensor, Linear Acceleration Sensor, Vector Rotation Sensor, Light Sensor, Proximity Sensor

Despite the fact that the Sensor List program showed a larger number of options in the Meizu MX5 smartphone, upon closer examination it turned out that the sensors themselves on board each of the smartphones are almost identical, both in number and purpose. Thus, parity is observed at this point of our comparison, and we have not identified a winner according to this criterion.

5.        Comparison of the work of GPS navigation.

Next, we will conduct a simultaneous GPS navigation test using the GPS Test program.

Both smartphones connected to satellites after a cold start and without connecting to Wi-Fi almost instantly, which is not surprising, since they have almost the same processors. The positioning accuracy also turned out to be high and the same in each of the devices. And finally, both the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone and the Meizu MX5 smartphone immediately connected to the GLONASS satellites. And taking into account the fact that each of the compared devices has a magnetic field sensor, there should not be any problems in the operation of GPS navigation in either case.

Thus, no one won the palm in the GPS navigation test, since both smartphones performed equally well.

6.        Comparison of case heating during intensive use.

Next, we will check how hot the cases of the Meizu MX 5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphones participating in the test are at maximum load. To do this, we simultaneously launched the game Asphalt 8 on both devices and played it for about 10 minutes.

After that, we measured the temperature of the case of each smartphone using a pyrometer. The heating of the case of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone reached almost 56 ° C, and the upper right corner of the back panel turned out to be its hottest area. Whereas the body of the Meizu MX 5 smartphone heated up to only 47 ° C , and the temperature distribution turned out to be more uniform.

It would seem that the M eizu MX5 smartphone won here too, but it was not there. Due to the metal case, the heat of the MX5 body is felt more strongly, which caused more discomfort for the skin of the hands than it would seem in the warmer but plastic Redmi Note 2.

Thus, if you like to play mobile games on your device, then the sessions with the Meizu MX5 smartphone will be shorter than with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. However, the actual heating of the case of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone is higher, especially in the upper right corner of the back panel . So, it is possible that during prolonged use at high load, the appearance of throttling as a protective measure against overheating of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone is not ruled out.

7.        Comparison of sound from external speakers.

Next, we will compare the sound from the external speaker of each of the compared smartphones. We evaluated the sound quality “by ear”, and measured the maximum volume using a sound level meter.

To do this, we set the same melody on each smartphone and listened to it several times while taking measurements with a sound level meter.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 31

The sound from the external speaker of the M eizu MX5 smartphone turned out to be not only more voluminous and pleasant, but also louder. The volume value on the sound level meter display even reached an incredible 100 dB, while when testing the volume level from the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 speaker, we measured hardly 85 dB.

Although the result of this point of our comparison turned out to be very predictable, we will still say that in the comparison of sound from external speakers, the Meizu smartphone became the winner.

eight.        Headphone sound comparison.

And now we will compare the sound in headphones when listening to music in smartphones M eizu M X 5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 2. We evaluated both smartphones according to this criterion by listening to the same song in FLAC format with a bit rate of 900 kbps, downloading it first to the memory of each device. Next, we listened to it in the same player on each smartphone using Xiaomi Mi Headphones HiFi Edition.

We liked the sound in each of the compared smartphones, although here the Meizu MX5 performed better, even if not by much. The range of low and medium frequencies played back when listening to music from this device turned out to be deeper.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 32

We do not rule out the possibility that when using standard players the situation may change in the other direction or even even out due to proprietary equalizer settings. However, we tried to make comparisons under the same conditions, and in this case, Meizu MX5 remained slightly superior. Although it is worth noting that the more affordable smartphone Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 will be able to give music lovers pleasant emotions when listening to their favorite songs.

nine.        Comparison of autonomy.

For many buyers, the autonomy of the device is one of the most important criteria when buying a smartphone. Therefore, we pay special attention to this issue when testing smartphones.

Recall that the Meizu M X 5 smartphone has a battery with a capacity of 3150 mAh. At the same time, the manufacturer has equipped this device with mCharge fast charging function.

As for the battery of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone, its capacity was 3060 mAh, and the fast charging function is also present in this device. However, unlike its opponent, the battery in Redmi Note 2 is removable, and you can replace it with a new one if necessary.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 vs Meizu MX5: comparison of two smartphones of different price segments with the same Helio X10 processor. – фото 33

In the test of the AnTuTu Battery Test program with a discharge of 80%, the Meizu MX 5 smartphone scored 7560 points, while in the same test under the same conditions, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone showed only 4600 points. In terms of battery life in this test, the Redmi Note 2 lasted almost 3.5 hours and the MX5 almost 50 minutes more. Thus, the autonomy advantage of the Meizu MX5 is simply gigantic. Perhaps this is due to the firmware of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, the level of optimization of which still leaves much to be desired. In any case, this is the current situation.

As for the fast charging function, the Meizu MX5 smartphone charges from 0% to 100% in 1 hour and 20 minutes, while Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 takes 40 minutes more. So, in this respect, the palm remained with the M eizu MX5.

The only advantage of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone at this point in our comparison was the ability to replace the battery on its own over time without contacting a service center.

ten.    Comparison of the rear cameras of smartphones.

Just like the autonomy of work, the capabilities of the built-in cameras in a smartphone are of great importance for many buyers. That's why testing built-in cameras takes us so long in video reviews, and in text reviews, it's one of the biggest chapters.

And although there are two built-in cameras in every modern smartphone, we will compare the main cameras in Meizu MX5 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphones, since we use them more often, and the pictures from them are much better due to more advanced sensors, lenses and focusing system.

As you already know from our special review , the Meizu MX5 smartphone has a rear camera with an IMX220 Exmor RS sensor from Sony and 6 Gorilla Glass 3 lenses. The resolution of the rear camera in this smartphone is 20.7 MP. Also in this camera, a laser focusing system is installed, the sensor window of which we see on the back panel of the Meizu MX5 case immediately below the LED flash. The aperture value of the optics of this camera is F / 2.2.

As for the rear camera of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone, it boasts a Samsung sensor with a resolution of 13 MP and a lens with 5 lenses with a viewing angle of 78 ° and an aperture of F / 2.2. The camera also has a PDAF focusing system, which is provided by the Heli o X10 processor.

If we do not take into account the resolution of the cameras, then both compared smartphones show us high and almost the same quality of pictures from their rear cameras.

A slight preference can be given to the camera of the Meizu MX5 smartphone, since it can more accurately determine the white balance, and the pictures come out with more natural colors. Also, the autofocus of the MX5's camera is slightly less likely to make mistakes. But once again, the advantage here is rather small, and in order to notice it, you need to study a large number of images from the cameras of both devices, as well as shoot from each of them for some time, not limited to two or three frames.

But when shooting video, the camera of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone will be preferable, since it continuously focuses on the subject, while in the Meizu MX5 smartphone, when shooting video, you need to use touch focus (by touch).

Thus, we have not identified a clear leader in this category.

eleven.    Summing up the comparison.

Well, now that we have considered all the main criteria when comparing two smartphones, it's time to take stock. The results for each comparison item are shown in the table below.

So, a simple calculation of the pluses showed that the Meizu MX5 smartphone came out the winner in our comparison, ahead of its counterpart with a score of 11:9. However, before making a final decision, you should carefully look at what the MX5 turned out to be better and by how much, and what turned out to be worse.

If you are ready to put up with an angular and simple design, as well as a plastic case, then all the other shortcomings of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone will not be as significant compared to the MX5. The main problem of Redmi Note 2 at the moment is its autonomy, which, we are sure, should be improved with software methods over time.

On the other hand, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone has undeniable advantages, some of which are critical - support for the Russian language in a device purchased in China, as well as the presence of a memory card slot. And these aspects, if you need a powerful device at a reasonable price, can be decisive and tip the scales in favor of this smartphone.

Of course, if the appearance and materials of the case, as well as the effect that your smartphone produces on others, is more important to you, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone will not work in this case. And if the price, all the more, does not matter to you, then in no case should you stop your choice on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone. However, we cannot advise choosing Meizu MX5 in such a situation either. Perhaps you should wait for the release of a smartphone of the same class from Xiaomi, which should be Mi5, or turn your eyes towards Xiaomi Mi Note. But do not forget also about smartphones from other manufacturers, which also have powerful hardware stuffing and premium appearance for almost the same money - OnePlus Two , ZUK Z 1, Honor 7 and others. They will soon be joined by some more interesting models, for example, Elephone Vowney. So, choose from what is here, and it is far from a fact that Meizu MX 5 will be the best among them.

As for our comparison, M eizu MX5 became the best smartphone in it, but the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 smartphone definitely deserved the title of "Editor's Choice", which more than one and a half million buyers who have already made their choice in favor of this novelty for such a short time since its inception.
